Protect a local copy before making a change
A safe backup is one you can find and verify.
Keep the original while you check
Before a migration, reset, account removal or device change, keep the device that holds the work. If there are unsent changes, verify a supported local backup or export before proceeding.
Verify more than a filename
Open the result and check that representative content is readable. Check attachments and internal links separately. A local file reference may point to a file that is not included in the export.
Test a small import first
Use a small set of representative notes to assess the supported import path. Check formatting, links, attachments and the handling of rich content. Existing plugin behavior and every format are not automatically preserved. Markdown, AsciiDoc and other formats should not be treated as interchangeable promises.
Keep local exposure in mind
Network encryption does not automatically encrypt files or backups on a device. Store the copy in a location appropriate to the sensitivity of the material and the people or tools that can access it.
